Joseph “Jay” Aretino

Director of Operations

Jay Aretino - VDI

In his role as VDI’s Director of Operations, Jay brings firsthand knowledge of and the proven capability to deliver world-class, vehicle-centric training courses brings around the world. In addition to nearly a decade of experience at VDI –first, as an Assistant Instructor, followed by stints as a Primary and Lead Instructor, as well as Chief Instructor – Mr. Aretino brings 20+ years of relevant and closely related professional instructing and operational experience to the VDI team.

In addition to his extensive background designing, developing, and delivering specialized training in a wide range of subjects, he served 21 years with the US Army and US Army Reserve in a variety of small units. Notable accomplishments during his military service include:

  • Multiple combat deployments
  • Small Unit Tactics Instructor
  • Basic and Advanced NCO Course Instructor
  • Operations NCO and Instructor, Small Arms Readiness Group
  • Range Safety NCOIC and Range Control NCOIC

Mr. Aretino has also garnered more than 25 years of State and County level Law Enforcement experience and has served in a variety of specialized units and positions, including:

  • SERT/SWAT Team
  • Dignitary Protection
  • Fugitive Warrant Squad
  • US Marshal’s Violent Fugitive Task Force
  • K9 SWAT Officer

In addition to his extensive tactical and field experience, his law enforcement career encompasses a variety of agency and academy-level instructor positions as well, including:

  • NJ PTC EVOC Instructor
  • Use of Force Instructor
  • Senior Instructor, Defensive Tactics
  • Senior Instructor, CQB
  • Senior Instructor, Room Entry and Clearing
  • Senior Instructor, OC

He holds additional instructor certifications as well, including:

  • USCCA Firearms Instructor
  • NRA Pistol Instructor, Range Safety Officer, NRA Concealed Carry Instructor
  • Vehicle Dynamics Institute Evasive Driving Instructor
  • Baker Defensive Tactics Vehicle Centric Defensive Tactics Instructor

Recognizing that while the Solo Practitioner approach – where one protection practitioner is responsible for managing the wide range of risks their Principal may face – is not the optimum approach to doing so, it is in fact being effectively implemented far more often and successfully than many in the profession would care to admit, it’s worthwhile to take a closer look at the strategies and tactics which contribute to the effectiveness of the Solo Practitioner paradigm.
