Agree. Same here with the Down Town high rise buildings, I've had that happen a few times in Down Town L.A. which with all the one ways the GPS can be very useful. Good to know that route and use GPS as a backup.

As mentioned above, GPS is a great tool/resource to have at our disposal. I ALWAYS make sure it is set with the end/primary destination for any detail I am on, especially being that I travel to and from the Los Angeles areas very often. However, just because it is set does not mean I am using it. I use it as a backup should something happen which would cause me to deviate from my route. Such as when the "Big Guy" in the back seat throws me a curve all and tells me en route that he wants to stop here or there... Now I am deviating from my planned route but at least I have the GPS set for my end/primary destination. I can always scroll back to those coordinates/location in a hurry should I have rerouted the GPS. It will be enough to get me back on track and then hopefully I can revert to my previously planned route. My primary route planning comes from the proper advance work conducted prior to detail which as mentioned can be quite simple (Google Maps satellite view, reach out to local contacts) or more thorough given the event and time and resources available. Unfortunately we know time and resources are not always available in this job. GPS's are great and if you don't have one in the vehicle utilized to do this job, get one. But don't rely on it completely. Conduct your pre-trip advance work and use whatever tools you can to get your principal to where he needs to go as safely, quickly and comfortably as possible. I use pre-trip advance work, notes in car, notes on hand (believe it or not) and whatever else it takes to not create any stress for myself and more importantly, the person in the back seat. Great articles Tony, thanks for putting this stuff out there.

I would agree. I do also use GPS but to supplement the hands on advance and local knowledge. I have been caught solely relying on GPS and then found that due to Down Town high rise buildings the signal was suddenly non-existent. Lucky for me I was on an advance, the GPS completely changed direction. GPS is a great tool to compliment the SD, however blind trust in GPS can have consequences.
