When VDI coined the phrase, “Behind the Wheel Emergencies” to describe the focus of our training nearly 14 years ago, it was in recognition of the fact that the most common risk the vast majority of Security Drivers face on an everyday basis is a potential crash. Today, with accident related fatalities on the rise, training to the broadest possible spectrum of risks drivers face - from potential accidents to security incidents - is as important as it was more than forty years ago when Tony Scotti first introduced the concept of training to an objective standard and the methodology that made it possible.

Night Driving; Understand the Risks and Take Appropriate Precautions

In many instances, driving at night is not out of the ordinary and in some cases, depending upon the Principal's schedule, preferences or proclivities, is the norm. And while fatigue is always a concern when it comes to driving at night, there are other risks that the driver must consider and account for. In fact, while a combination of safety and security risks tends to make vehicle movements the highest risk endeavor a Principal and his or her protectors will engage in on any given day, movements which take place at night may present even greater risks than those which take place during daylight hours.

Last week, as we wrapped up what, by all accounts, was another successful Protective/Evasive Driving course (our 32nd training delivery of the year) one of the 18 students who participated in the training asked me..

What it is I do when we are not delivering training somewhere in the world?

The answer to that question takes us back to the early '70's and the origins of VDI's predecessor, the Scotti School of Defensive Driving.

The question also points us to what might best be referred to as the pillars of driving.
